What NOT to do in an emergency

The first wrong instinct is the most dangerous one.

Under pressure people make the mistakes that turn a recoverable fault into an irreversible disaster. Before you touch the failed server:

DO NOT

Rebuild the RAID blindly

A rebuild onto a near-failed disk often ends in a second drive dropping out. If the array is degraded, document its state first (photo of the LCD, screenshot of the controller), then call. The rebuild is almost never the right first move.

DO NOT

Run chkdsk / fsck “just to see”

On a suspect volume, chkdsk or fsck write to the filesystem and can make recovery far harder. If the volume is not mounted, leave it unmounted. Document and call.

DO NOT

Swap disks out of order

Changing the physical order of the disks without documenting it first destroys information that is critical to logical reconstruction. Photograph the disks in their slots, label them physically, then call.

What you can do right now

Three useful actions in the first 10 minutes.

  1. Power down and stop rebooting repeatedly. Repeated restarts on degrading hardware make things worse (a predictive-failure disk turning into a dead one, for example).
  2. Export the System Event Log via iDRAC, iLO, XClarity, IPMI, iRMC or CIMC if still reachable. It is the single most important document for diagnosis.
  3. Take photos of the status LEDs, the LCD panel, the drive slots, the error code on the display. Every physical indicator is valuable information.

The questions we get most often.

Do you guarantee same-day service on a downed server?

It depends on the situation. For remote hands in datacenters we already cover (Aruba PSP, the main Lombardy sites) yes, typically within a few hours. For on-site service at your premises it depends on the distance and on the day’s workload. For data recovery we start immediately with a physical clone of the media so no critical window is lost. When you call, the technical triage is free and immediate — we give you a realistic time estimate in the first few minutes.

Do you operate 24/7?

For critical situations on production servers and for remote hands in datacenters we have extended on-call coverage. Planned work is done during office hours. If your server is down, call straight away: the window for avoiding cumulative degradation is often narrow.

How much does emergency phone triage cost?

Phone triage is free and comes with no obligation. Cost, timing and feasibility of the actual work are communicated once we understand the problem. There is no commitment to proceed if our assessment does not convince you — even in an emergency, we would rather you compare options than be pushed into a suboptimal move.

Do you also cover brands not on the list (older IBM System x, Acer Altos, etc.)?
